Day 3, Part 1: Another Day, Another Farm

Mike and Desirae at Upstream Brewing in Omaha

Today started with a brunch meet-up in Ankeny, IA (about 40 minutes from the farm we are staying at). Mike’s high school friend Julia lives in the area and she and her husband were able to take some time out of their day to visit with us. It was fun to catch up on each others’ lives and the food was delicious at Trailside Tap.

Fun Sidebar: I first met Julia and Mark in Chicago, March of 2017, when we planned a St Patrick’s Day weekend there. It was time to witness the famous turning the river green! We had a blast, drank one or two drinks (or maybe it was more… it’s a little blurry), and spent two days together being silly. We had so much fun that we promised to get together again either in Detroit, Des Moines, or somewhere else… but life does what it tends to and we hadn’t yet gotten around to making any plans.

Fast forward to November 2019. Mike and I went to Nashville for Thanksgiving weekend. We’re sitting in a restaurant and I checked my phone… I have a comment from Julia on a check-in I posted, “I’m in Nashville too!” Mike and I are laughing that we ended up there at the same time and message that we should meet up. Then I look up from our table and guess who I see at a table across the restaurant from us?? JULIA was sitting right there, in the same restaurant! It was the craziest thing, and we had so much fun together again. We crashed her girls’ weekend and went out for drinks and live music together all night. BTW, Nashville is amazing and everyone should go check it out!

Somehow we didn’t take a picture together at brunch, so here is a flashback of me and Julia in Chicago. (I couldn’t quickly find one of all four of us and clearly we’re the better looking two anyway.)

Back to today…

We drove to Omaha today, and drove right into downtown and then to their Old Market area. It was a little hairy at times, but Mike did a great job. With the car being towed behind us, we cannot back up at all. At some point, we expect to have to get out and disconnect it (luckily it’s USUALLY quick and easy..) because we get stuck somewhere and have to back up, but we barely made it through Omaha without having to. Realizing parking right in the Old Market area would be impossible, we drove outside of it until we found a road we could park on, and then walked in. It was nice to get out and walk a bit after three days of driving/riding in the RV.

Omaha was great! It’s a bigger city than I expected… I don’t know why I thought it was smaller. Old Market is a nice area with lots of restaurants, bars, and shops. We decided to try two breweries while we were there. They both had more of my kind of beer than Mike’s. Mike is an IPA drinker and I’m all about the dark and sweet beers. I LOVE a coffee beer and both places had their own. Anyway, we would love to go back to Omaha and spend a few days sometime.

When we arrived at the farm, we had one more small issue with a piece that connects the car and tow bar. We went to unhook the car, discovered the issue, and decided I’ll be driving the Fiesta for the beginning of the drive tomorrow until we can get a replacement piece. EDIT: This ended up being super easy and quick, we just drove separate about 30 miles to the nearest auto parts store and had the part in less than 7 minutes for less than $7. Hooked the car back up and were good to go!

Can we get one day without anything breaking, please? (We are thankful that they’ve all been small things and quick fixes, so we aren’t really complaining or getting hung up on it too much!)

Next post has the details about the AMAZING farm we stayed at!
